Seminar : Slam Poetry Reading

The department of English Language and Literature in cooperation with the American Embassy in Amman hosted Slam Poetry seminar done by the African American poet, Alysia Harris, the American Award-Winning Slam Poet.

Alysia Harris shared her experience as an African-American poet, explaining that Slam Poetry as an emerging genre which contributes to raising awareness about universal human values and social issues.

Moreover, she stated that Slam poetry is based on interaction between the slam poet and his/her audience. Slam poetry uses simple language, creates new meanings for reality, and expresses true personal feelings.

She also shared her experience, her suffering, and her pain and all these experiences help her create a poem expressing her true feelings and alleviating her pain. Here, as she pointed out, poetry becomes a healing process as it gives hope and makes one strong.

She finally read some poems of hers and others'. In a Q&A session, moderated by Dr. Abdullah Al-Dagamseh, Alysia Harris addressed various questions and comments raised by the audience. The chairman of the Department of English Language and Literature, Prof. Yousef Bader, some Faculty members of the Department, and some students attended the talk.
