Students at the Department of Modern Languages took part in the global literary contest—The Goncourt Prize (French: Le prix Goncourt) —recently held in Beirut. The contest was organized by the Middle East office of Francophone University Association (French: Agence universitaire de la Francophonie) for the year 2015. Dr. Batool Muheisen—the contest's coordinator at the Department of Foreign Languages—indicated that the award is interested in French Literature and is given by Goncourt Academy to the best prose work in four literary forms: Novel, Short Story, Poetry, and Biography. Dr. Muheisen stated that Yarmouk University represented by a team of students from the Department of Modern Languages has participated in the first part of the contest held in Amman in the presence of Salwa Nacousi—Education and Cultural Attaché at the French Embassy (French: Attachée de Coopération universitaire). Students had to choose the best novel among 15 novels written in French to win the Goncourt Prize. Luckily, Our team chose Mathias Énard's Compass (French: Boussole) which won the Goncourt prize for the year 2015: the final stage of the award was held in France.
As declared by Dr.Muheisen,Yarmouk University represented Jordan for the first time in the second stage of this contest which was held in Beirut earlier this month. This participation sheds light on one of the important goals of the University, represented by its administration and professors, which aims at encouraging its students to read French Literature. On the other hand, professor Yusuf Abu Al-udous, dean of the Faculty of Arts, asserted that it is important as well as a privilege for Yarmouk University to represent Jordan in this global contest. Such kind of participation in international contests and programs gives students the opportunity to compete against and alongside other students in scientific and literary contests. It also allows them to gain experiences that help them have more social and academic adjustments through employing their newly acquired experiences in their academic achievements.
