About Us

While natural and technical sciences shape the material aspects of societies, arts and humanities effectively contribute to forming people’s mentality, motivating their feelings, and raising their consciousness. For such a fact, it has been inevitable to establish the Faculty of Arts, which has grand cultural missions concerning humans and all related aspects such as keeping pace with and monitoring society’s developments in order to create the appropriate perspective and vision for dealing with such developments. Consequently, the Faculty of Arts has become an integral basis of university education.

In 1976, the year in which Yarmouk University was established, the Faculty of Sciences and Arts has included majors in sciences, arts, economics, and administrative sciences. In 1981, the units of Arabic language, English language, humanities and social sciences have become the basis of the Faculty of Arts. Later, the Faculty has developed and included nine departments:

  • The Dept. of Arabic Language and Literature.
  • The Dept. of English Language and Literature.
  • The Dept. of History.
  • The Dept. of Sociology and Social Service.
  • The Dept. of Political Science.
  • The Dept. of Geography.
  • The Dept. of Translation.
  • The Dept. of Modern Languages.
  • The Dept. of Semitic and Oriental Languages (Hebrew and Persian).

The Faculty is planning to launch bachelor programs in Turkish Language and Literature, International and Diplomatic Relations, and three Ph.D. programs in English, Translation, and Geography. The Faculty hosted the first inaugural Conference for the Society of Faculties of Arts of the Association of Arab Universities in 2001. In that conference, the Faculty of Arts at Yarmouk University was selected as the home for the Society of Faculties of Arts, taking into account that a scholarly peer-reviewed journal is published by the Society of Faculties of Arts twice a year.
